British Columbia launches online music and entertainment hub

Showcase BC will host free live concerts and provide one-time grants to artists.

What Happened: The Government of British Columbia and Creative BC launched an online music and entertainment center to showcase local artists and engage British Columbians at home.

Why it matters: The initiative will support the province’s music industry by providing one-time grants to emerging and established artists.

British Columbia has built a new stage for local artists to perform and interact with fans.

Showcase BC, created in partnership with Creative BC, will host its first free live concert next week. The platform will serve as an online hub for shows, entertainment and content featuring artists from British Columbia.

“The BC music industry has responded quickly by seizing opportunities for live streaming and online gathering. Today we are stepping up our efforts to support their efforts, ”British Columbia Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Lisa Beare said in a press release on Saturday.

Creative BC will also provide one-time grants of $ 500 for emerging artists and $ 2,000 for established artists to help musicians participate in Showcase BC. Funding will be available to applicants from Creative BC’s existing Amplify BC program for live streaming, songwriting and professional development.

Details of Showcase BC’s first concert will be released soon.

Many of British Columbia’s arts and culture events and attractions have gone virtual as the spread of COVID-19 has canceled concerts and closed venues around the world.

North Vancouver’s Park Sound Studio is hosting the fourth installment of its virtual concert series on Saturday night. Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Dan Mangan hosts weekly hour-long concerts to raise money for local charities. Vancouver Cinematics organizes virtual film screenings.
